Kamehameha Schools, the largest private landowner in Hawaii, has an extensive commercial real estate portfolio to support the schools’ educational mission. Walter Thoemmes III, who worked as a licensed architect and is now managing director of Kamehameha Schools’ commercial real estate division, recently gave a presentation to AIA Honolulu, ACEC of Hawaii, and GCA members showcasing the various projects his team manages, including Kapalama Kai, a mixed-use, transit-oriented development site; Keawalau, a community of 537 affordable housing units near the Waipahu transit center; and residential projects in the masterplan of Kakaako, with targeted completion dates as early as 2027.
