UH-WEST OAHU'S CREATIVE MEDIA FACILITY - Kiewit Building Group, Inc.

The Creative Media Facility at UH-West Oahu was built to provide students hands-on experiences and learning opportunities to prepare them for careers in the creative media sector of the economy such as video game design and development; interactive design; motion and visual graphics; film; and television production and new media. The building contains multiple rooms with state-of-the art technology and audio-visual equipment to support a curriculum and student advancement around creative media.

WESTIN MAUI RESORT & SPA, KAANAPALI - Swinerton Builders

Swinerton partnered with Trinity Investments and G70 International in the multi‐phased renovation and expansion of the Westin Maui Resort and Spa in Kaanapali, Maui. The complex and logistically challenged project utilized the Design‐Assist delivery method to keep the project within budget and on schedule. The project’s scope included renovation of the Beach Tower's Guestrooms and Suites, Reception Ballrooms, Lobby, Porte Cochere, Public Spaces, Pools, Water‐features, Restaurant, Spa, Retail Shops, and new Pool Bar.

WAIHEE STREAM EMERGENCY REPAIRS - Koga Engineering & Construction, Inc.

The Waihee Stream Emergency Repairs Project main objective was to upgrade the existing stream bank lining just downstream of Ahilama Road Bridge.  The existing stream bank lining was damaged from past rain events, threatening further erosion of an adjacent private property.  The project scope involved repairing approximately 40 linear foot section of existing collapse stream bank lining by removing and replacing the existing grouted rip-rap slope lining, backfilling with boulders and constructing a CRM slope lining along with replacement of chain link fencing at the top of the CRM.  In addition, repair and shore approximately 100 linear feet of existing grouted rip-rap slope lining by clearing vegetation and patching all holes and cracks with grout.  Lastly and most importantly, gravel filled sack gabions were required to be placed along the cutoff wall at the toe of the slope lining to protect from further erosion/damage.  Because project involved in-water stream work and sensitivity to the surrounding environment, adherence to a multitude of National, State, and County permits were essential.

KAPAA STREAM BRIDGE - DRILLED SHAFT FOUNDATIONS - Hawaiian Dredging Construction Company, Inc.

With attention to detail and focus on quality control, Hawaiian Dredging’s Waterfront and Foundation Division was able to successfully complete installation of 48-inch diameter drilled shaft foundations, up to 140 feet deep, supporting the new Kapaa Stream Bridge for Central Federal Lands Highway Division and Hawaiian Dredging’s Heavy Division.

WAIANAE SMALL BOAT HARBOR PIERS B AND C REPAIR - Healy Tibbitts Builders, Inc.

Healy Tibbitts successfully completed the Waianae Small Boat Harbor Piers B and C Repair project over three months ahead of the contract completion date. The project provides much needed improvements to the pier facilities for the Waianae boating community. Healy’s team overcame the challenges of working within an active and congested harbor with a remarkable achievement of ZERO recordable accidents. Healy’s exceptional performance earned at Letter of Commendation from DLNR’s Director Edward Underwood.

KEKAULUOHI BUILDING A/C SYSTEM IMPROVEMENTS AND EMERGENCY GENERATOR CONNECTION - Civil-Mechanical Contractor

Adjacent to Iolani Palace, the Kekauluohi Building houses a vast collection of important Hawaiian history including, pictures, artifacts, and documents. This project replaced the air conditioning, (“A/C”) and dehumidification equipment which exceeded its mechanical life.  Upon completion of the project, the environment within the building was maintained at a temperature of 60 to 65 Degrees F with a relative humidity of 45 to 50%, conditions considered to be optimum by the National Standards of Archival Records.

TAXIWAY A-C INTERSECTION RECONSTRUCTION AT KAHULUI AIRPORT - Goodfellow Bros.

Goodfellow Bros., LLC has successfully completed work on the Taxiway A-C Intersection Reconstruction at Kahului Airport. This challenging three-phase project, constructed during the COVID-19 Pandemic, is a testament to the strength of GCA contractors, the State of Hawaii, and Goodfellow Bros.’ craft and management team, as they all came together to complete a difficult project safely and efficiently amidst the ever-changing requirements of uncertain times.

OPAEKAA BRIDGE REPAIR / REHABILITATION - Hawaiian Dredging Construction Company, Inc.

Hawaiian Dredging reconstructed the historic Opaekaa Bridge, originally built in 1919. The original character of the bridge needed to be preserved while performing modifcations such as repairing of the existing visible bridge trusses, the addition of new abutments, a new concrete deck system, and the installation of code-compliant steel crash barriers within the bridge trusses. The bridge maintained its existing width while it was upgraded with new striping to accommodate a shared roadway with bicycles.

NORTH SHORE BRIDEGES - KAWELA AND NANAHU - Kiewit Infrastructure West Co.

This project removed and replaced two bridges on the North Shore of Oahu. Scope included the installation and removal of two bypass bridges during construction of the 53-foot-long Kawela Bridge and the 50-foot-long Nanahu Bridge. The project was completed in September 2020.

KAPALAMA CONTRAINMENT TERMINAL - Kiewit Infrastructure West Co.

This project constructed a new container terminal at Honolulu Harbor on Oahu. The scope of work included site demolition; hazardous materials abatement; mass excavation; new utilities including sewer, water, drainage and electrical; a comfort station, AC and PCC Pavement; and new security fencing on the 60-acre site. The primary feature of work was 120,000 CY of 8-in. and 15-in. thick concrete pavement.

SAND ISLAND WASTEWATER TREATMENT PLAN - ULTRAVIOLET CHANNEL INSTALLATION DESIGN-BUILD - Hawaiian Dredging Construction Company, Inc. 

Hawaiian Dredging designed and constructed a new ultraviolet (UV) disinfection system, including a new control system to handle all existing and future UV disinfection processes. The new UV system will increase disinfection capacity, provide system reliability, reduce energy consumption, and lower operating costs. This project improvement allows an additional 30 MGD of sewage to be disinfected for the ever-growing population of Honolulu.

KAMEHAMEHA HIGHWAY, WASTEWATER PUMP STATION 36" FORCE MAIN REPLACEMENT - Healy Tibbitts Builders, Inc.

Healy Tibbitts successfully constructed the Kamehameha Highway Wastewater Pump Station 36” Force Main Replacement Project for the City to provide a vital upgrade and increased capacity to meet future growing demands. The project included installing 2,957 feet of 42” HDPE pipe underneath the Moanalua and Kalihi Streams. Healy Tibbitt’s innovation overcame many challenges of working in difficult environmental and geotechnical conditions to provide the City with a modern sewage transmission system.

MAUNAKEA MARKETPLACE AFFORDABLE RENTAL - Ralph S. Inouye Co., Ltd.

The Maunakea Marketplace affordable rental project is a renovation converting twenty-four thousand square feet of underutilized commercial storage space into thirty-nine affordable rental apartments on the second floor of the Maunakea Marketplace in the heart of Chinatown. The undermaintained timber structure and undocumented tenant installed utility lines challenged Ralph S. Inouye Co., Ltd. To work collaboratively with Design Partners Inc. To provide practical unit layouts and proper structural repairs to extend the building’s longevity.

NOHONA HALE - Swinerton Builders

Swinerton and Bronx Pro Group teamed together to develop and build Nohona Hale in response to HCDA’s request for affordable low‐to‐moderate income housing in Kakaako within Honolulu’s urban core. The pioneering project utilized the micro‐unit building concept and included 105 affordable‐income, energy efficient residential units in a 17‐story tower set upon a two‐level podium that houses the lobby, community spaces and management offices.

KEAUKAHA ELEMENTARY SCHOOL - A/C EFFICIENCY REPLACEMENT - Aircond Hawaii, Ltd.

Keaukaha Elementary School’s A/C equipment was replaced under the DOE’s newly established JOC program. Equipment in the Administration Building, (9 each), classrooms, (15 each), portables, (4 each) and library, (1 each). Installed and tested on this project was over 2,400 linear feet of refrigeration piping, 120 plus valves and over 1,100 copper fittings. This project was successfully complete during uncertain COVID times.

FORD ISLAND SBX COOLING SYSTEM UPGRADE - Dorvin D. Leis Co., Inc.

The Sea-Based X-Band radar vessel otherwise known as SBX, is a converted Russian oil platform that now houses a nearly 300 foot tall radar “bubble”. This vessel is operated by the Missile Defense Agency with the mission of defending against potential ballistic missiles from threat nations such as North Korea. The vessel usually deploys to sea for hundreds of days at a time and when it returns from deployment it typically undergoes repairs and upgrades. Dorvin D. Leis Co., Inc’s. (DDL’s) role was primarily related to upgrades to the cooling system which posed many significant challenges. These challenges included highly limited access for craftsmen, material, and equipment, an aggressive schedule requiring around the clock production, working with exotic materials, and simply being on a giant vessel meant to be stationed somewhere in the middle of the ocean.

THE QUEEN'S MEDICAL CENTER - WEST OAHU, CLINICAL SERVICES CENTER 3RD AND 4TH FLOOR PACKAGE 2 - Nordic PCL Construction, Inc.

Nordic PCL Construction renovated 19,000 SF at The Queen’s Medical Center West Oahu Clinical Services Center. The project encompassed a complete re-imagination of the 3rd and 4th floors to expand the clinic’s specialty services and create a healthcare facility that enhances the patient experience. The renovation added 41 new patient rooms and created a space that feels more like a luxury hotel than a clinic, raising the level of care and comfort available to West Oahu residents.

Hawaiian Dredging completed the new Moanalua High School Performing Arts Center. This elegant Performing Arts Center boasts a 694-seat auditorium, a stage with state-of-the-art audio and visual systems, an orchestra pit, a grand lobby, and facility operations space. The facility also includes a back of house area with costume, dressing, preparatory, and technical rooms. This state-of-the-art facility addresses a practical need to accommodate a growing student body and its award-winning music and performing arts department.
